Lenovo A7000 – Initial Impressions

Lenovo A7000

Lenovo A7000

Lenovo launched A7000 just after 3 months of A6000 which was very popular and almost sold out in seconds during Flash sales on Flipkart. Lenovo claims to have sold more than 300000 units of A6000 in 3 months. Android smartphones in budget category (Below INR 10k) attracting more and more buyers, and Lenovo is taking right steps to amaze consumers and remain in competition by introducing powerful low budget phones like A6000. And A7000 is one more smartphone in same category with upgraded specifications.

Lenovo A7000 is available on Flipkart for Rs.8999. I bought it in first Flash Sale and here are my First Impressions after using it for 3 days. Lenovo A7000 is light weight even at 5.5” large device. I used it with Single Sim on 3G & WiFi.

What’s in the box?

Lenovo A7000 Accessories

Lenovo A7000 comes in white package. Inside you will find usual accessories as earphones, USB cable, Wall charger, Battery, Warranty card, User Manual and a free screen guard.

Design and Build

Though it has 5.5” display, it feels too light (142g) for the size because of Plastic build. Build quality is OK, nothing special about it. Despite being large screen it can be handled one handed for most of the time. It feels sturdy while holding it in hand. Power and Volume buttons are on side and easily accessible and gave good feedback while pressing. One thing I don’t like is back panel is removable so easily that you may think case is compulsory for the device. Back panel is also made of thin plastic with matte finish but fits without any creaking noise. You don’t get Gorilla Glass protection and this may be the reason of providing screen protector inside the Box. It has LED light for notification but capacitive navigation buttons at bottom are NOT backlit, which may cause problem while using phone in low light.

Screen

A7000 has 5.5” screen with resolution of 720 X 1280 which comes to 267ppi. Viewing angles are good enough and screen brightness is also good for the price. Direct sunlight visibility is OK. IPS screen produces very good colors and viewing media / playing games also gives pleasant experience.

Software and user interface.

Lenovo A7000 comes with android lollipop out of the box with Lenovo Vibe UI 2.0 on top. Using Vibe UI is very good experience but it lacks app drawer, as on Vibe UI all apps you install remains on home screen. You can add up to 18 home screens which is more than enough. Vibe UI comes with lots of customization options including Themes. You can apply themes from Theme Center app. Due to 2GB RAM, multitasking is very easy and fluid, didn’t felt any lag while operating / task switching even with more than 16 apps running at a time.

Out of 8GB of inbuilt storage, approx. 3.5GB is available for user on first boot, but you can add Memory Card up to 32GB and set it as default storage. Apps and Games can be directly installed on SD card, though some part of the app / game will be installed on internal storage. There are many bloat ware (pre-installed apps) installed which may not be useful for you, you can un-install them.

Gaming on A7000 is very good experience but you need to lower graphic settings in some apps like Asphalt 8 to get rid of frame drops. It can play almost all games. Device heating is common problem in today’s generation of android phones and Lenovo A7000 is no exception. Device gets heated when playing games for about 18-20 minutes, but it doesn’t get too hot, and it’s bearable.

These are the benchmark test results.

Battery

Battery on Lenovo A7000 is of 2900 mAh capacity and it easily lasts full day on moderate usage. I got around 4.5 hours of on screen time on single charge. Standby battery drain is very low. On silent mode during 8 hours of sleep battery was 10% down with mobile data ON. It has Ultimate power saver mode, just like we saw on Samsung devices, where only limited functions are available like call & sms etc. with black & white screen to last long battery.

Camera

Lenovo A7000 comes with 8MP rear camera and 5MP front camera. Pictures come out good in day light but struggles in low light. Picture quality is not as good as some of the competition like Xiaomi Note 4G. Auto Focusing is not great always. Here are some of the sample pictures taken on Lenovo A7000. For camera settings, check images above and see Camera pictures below.

Speaker & “Dolby Atmos”

Speaker volume is high enough to watch movies or YouTube videos. It is world’s First smartphone with “Dolby Atmos” technology, which can be experienced on headphones only. I found this feature gimmicky with in-box headphones. Didn’t checked sound quality on High-end headphones.

Conclusion

Considering the price of Rs.8999, Lenovo A7000 delivers Very Good performance but not everything is great. Let’s take a quick look at pros & cons of Lenovo A7000. I recommend to Buy Lenovo A7000 despite minor cons.

Pros

Screen Quality

Design & weight

Smooth UI

Battery

Cons

No Tough Glass protection

Camera

Low Internal Storage (3.5GB user available)

  1. Hi, this is a good read but i just want to ask, what pre installed apps are safe to uninstall especially google apps which take a lot of space.. Thank you!

    • Yes, it’s safe. Uninstall the apps which you do not use. Make sure you do NOT uninstall these apps.
      Google App
      Google Play Store
      Google Play Services
      Android System WebView

  2. myself problem facing that storage. How to move apps from phone to SD card.there is no such option in apps manager.how to solve this problem.

    • Check if your photo and videos are saved on SD card by default, you can change it by going to Camera settings. Delete unwanted whatsapp media files or move them to SD card. And last delete unused apps and games from your mobile. Hope this helps.
