Oneplus 5 – still a “Flagship Killer”?

After some official images revealed by Oneplus and some leaked images floating around the web for more than a month, finally Oneplus announced their 2017 “Flagship” device Oneplus 5. In India, the device will be launched on 22nd June 2017. Is it still a “Flagship Killer”? Let’s find out.

Oneplus 5

Design

Oneplus 5 has a similar design of iPhone 7 Plus (from the back) and Oppo R11. It sports 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED Display with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. According to Phonearena, it has the same display as found on Oneplus 3T. It might be the ONLY flagship device of 2017 with Full HD Display panel. It has an all-metal unibody design with fingerprint scanner residing at the same place as on Oneplus 3T (probably the same size also). Dimensions of the device are 154.2 x 74.1 x 7.25mm, yes it is the slimmest flagship device ever launched by Oneplus. Building a thin phone, Oneplus sacrificed on battery, 3300 mAh which is lower capacity compare to Oneplus 3T, but the company claims to improve on battery performance by up to 20% compare to its predecessor.

Software & Hardware

The device runs on Oxygen OS based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Near to stock Android experience on Oxygen OS also offers some additional features like Reading mode, Gaming DND mode & Secure Box, etc. The Oneplus 5 is powered by latest Snapdragon 835 Octa-core processor (4 x 2.45 GHz + 4 x 1.9 GHz) with Adreno 540 GPU. There are 2 variants; 6GB RAM with 64GB internal storage & 8GB RAM with 128GB internal storage.

Camera

Oneplus 5 features Dual camera setup at the rear, 16MP primary (f/1.7) Sony IMX 398 and 20MP (f/2.6) Sony IMX 350 Telephoto lens with PDAF and EIS, It lacks OIS. For selfie, there’s 16MP Fixed Focus (Sony IMX 371) camera with f/2.0 aperture. Rear camera can shoot videos in 4k at 30fps& 1080p at 60fps. It can also record slow motion 720p videos at 120fps. The front camera can shoot videos up to 1080p at 30fps. Other camera features include Pro Mode, Time-Lapse, Raw Image, HDR, etc.

Connectivity

On the connectivity front, the dual sim (nano + nano) device supports almost all bands worldwide including 4G VoLTE for Indian consumers. There’s USB Type-C port for Dash charging & file transfer, and it also supports USB Audio. Other connectivity features include 3.5mm headphone jack, Dual band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS (GLNOASS, BeiDou).

Pricing & Availability

For the global market, 6GB RAM + 64GB storage variant is priced at USD 479 (approx 31000 INR) & 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant will be available at USD 539 (approx 35000 INR).  It will go on sale in India at Rs.32999 & Rs.37999 approx., will update the pricing after the official launch.
