Oneplus 2, a “2016 Flagship Killer” (as they call it) is finally announced today in a unique manner via VR (virtual reality). Oneplus One received very good response in spite being First product by Oneplus because of the specifications offered for the price of under $350. Oneplus 2 also has very good specifications with some things upgraded and some not. The handset comes on 2 variants 16GB+3GB RAM and 64GB+4GB RAM.
Oneplus 2 – Design
Oneplus 2 maintained the design of Oneplus One as it was widely accepted by users. Though some changes are made but overall looks and foam factor remains the same. The Oneplus 2’s outer frame is crafted from a resilient alloy of aluminium and magnesium. It comes with StyleSwap covers with different options including Sandstone Black, Bamboo, Rosewood, Black Apricot, and Kevlar. Camera module is placed slightly below as compare to Oneplus One with added Laser Autofocus as found on LG G4. On the right side there are Volume rockers and Power key. On left side there is dedicated “Alert Slider”, a 3-stop sliding button to control notifications profiles like All Notifications, Priority Notifications and No Interruptions. On the bottom there is speaker grill, primary microphone, and USB Type C port for charging and data transfer. On the top there is secondary noise cancelling mic and 3.5mm headphone jack. On the front below 5.5” display there is Fingerprint scanner along with Back and Menu capacitive keys.
Display
Oneplus 2 sports 5.5 inch 1080p Full HD IPS LCD display with Gorilla Glass protection. Oneplus didn’t opted for 2k display like other Flagship devices and it is for better battery performance as 2k displays put more stress on battery life. The Oneplus 2’s spacious 5.5” display sports an impressive 1500:1 contrast ratio, so blacks are deeper and colors are more stunning.
Software & UI
Oneplus 2 runs on Oxygen OS 2.0 based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. Oxygen OS includes features like Dark Mode, App permission feature, integrated Waves MaxxAudio, integrated Swiftkey keyboard and it also supports custom icon packs in almost any format. You can also play with LED notifications and icon grid size. Though it is not stock android but Oxygen OS provides smooth UI.
Processor / RAM / Storage
Oneplus 2 is powered by 1.8GHz Octa-core Snapdragon 810 (64-bit) with Adreno 430 GPU. The device has 4GB/3GB DDR4 RAM and 64GB/16GB internal storage with no memory expansion slot.
Camera
It has 13MP rear camera with larger 1.3 micron pixel sensors (for better low light performance) and f/2.0 aperture with Dual LED Flash. Optical Image Stabilization is added to the Oneplus 2. It also has a feature called “Super Resolution Mode” by which photo images are processed to 50MP resolution (same which found on Oppo Find 7). Laser Autofocus helps to focus in 0.2 seconds. Rear camera can also record 4k videos and Slow motion 720p videos at 120fps. Front camera is same 5MP as found on Oneplus One.
Sim / Connectivity / Battery
Oneplus 2 is Dual sim device with 2 Nano sim (DSDS) slots. Check what “Dual Sim Dual Standby (DSDS)” & “Dual Sim Dual Active (DSDA)” is in this article by Deepak Singh on GadgetToUse (http://gadgetstouse.com/gadget-tech/dual-sim-dual-standby-and-dual-sim-dual-active/8985). Connectivity band supported are as follows.
- GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz
- WCDMA Bands: 1 / 2 / 5 / 8
- FDD LTE Bands: 1 / 3 / 5 / 7 / 8 / 20
It supports Dual Band Wi-Fi 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n and 5GHz 802.11 a/n/ac. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.1, Internal GPS antenna with GLONASS and Digital Compass. The device sports larger 3300 mAh battery as compare to 3100 mAh on Oneplus One.
Pricing / availability
Oneplus 2 continues to rely on Invite system which is frustrating for buyers as it was very hard to get invite in early days of Oneplus One. You can head over to the Oneplus website and register yourself for invite. Price for 64GB variant is kept at $389 (INR 24999) and for 16GB at $329 (INR 22999) which is very aggressive pricing. Check image above for pricing in different Countries. The device will go on sale from August 11 and in India it will be sold on Amazon exclusively, I will post the links as they go live.

What’s missing on Oneplus 2
- Oneplus skipped NFC on Oneplus 2 which is major bummer for it to be called as “Flagship Killer”
- Wireless charging is also not supported, but we might (not sure about it yet) add it externally as it has removable back covers.
- Oneplus 2 is missing Quick Charge and this was not expected as 3300 mAh battery take more than 3 hour to Fully charge the device according to MKBHD (Video Link).
